Google and Apple Fight for Better OS with Android 4.5 Lollipop and iOS 8: Android 4.5 vs iOS 8

By

Apple and Google have always been neck in neck when it comes to mobile operating system. Both companies have been competing for the biggest market share. Increasing their market share means more hardware sold for each company. During Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference, the tech giant has introduced its upcoming iOS 8 drumming up hype for its upcoming devices. With Google's I/O event just around the corner, can it do the same? Who will gain the bigger market share this year?

Previously, Steve Jobs mentioned the company's goal of transforming the Mac into a "digital hub." This meant turning the Mac into a one-stop-device allowing users to perform a wide range of tasks. That was in 2001 during the Macworld. It appears Apple will be referring back to what Steve Jobs wants only with a twist. The company's announcement of the iOS 8 and its features suggest that the iPhone will be the one-stop hub instead of the Mac. Some of the features people can expect from the upcoming mobile operating system:

  • iPhone access is required if users want to call or send messages through the MAC OS X Yosemite.
  • People can rely on their iPhones in the future for health and fitness data. The upcoming HealthKit and Health app offer fitness and dietary functions.
  • The Homekit feature to be included in the OS can allow users to turn their handsets into a universal remote to control smart devices at home.
  • CarPlay will make it possible to offer hands-free handset operation.

Apple has also been reportedly working on allowing third-party developers to access TouchID for more options in security and financial transactions.

Android 4.5 Lollipop

Google will reportedly be revealing its Android 4.5 Lollipop update later this month during the I/O Conference. The company has released the Android 4.4.3 update therefore leaving the Lollipop to be unveiled. The update will further address the fragmentation issue of Android. Guardian Liberty Voice reported about Android 4.5 Lollipop's support of the Hera project. This initiative will unify the Chrome, Android and Search experience. More importantly the upcoming update will be featuring HTML 5 integration and improved multi-window support.

It should be a stiffer competition given Apple's more open OS following Android's footsteps closely.
