The future of Nickelodeon's hit teen sitcom "Sam & Cat," which stars iCarly's Jennette McCurdy (Sam Puckett) and pop star Ariana Grande (Cat Valentine), remains unclear, but rumors are going around that it could soon be officially cancelled.
Nickelodeon programming president Russell Hicks earlier said that the show has been renewed for a second season, but there has been no official announcement yet. Other sources from Nickelodeon said that as of March 31, 2014, a renewal has yet to be decided.
Controversy surrounding the show's cancellation started when McCurdy released racy lingerie selfies online earlier this year. A few weeks after this, she skipped Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards because of how she said the network treated her.
McCurdy said: "I was put in an uncomfortable, compromising, unfair situation (many of you have guessed what it is) and I had to look out for me. I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing. I want to thank those of you who have reached out with kind words of support, McCurdians and Arianators alike. No matter who or what you support, I believe in supporting fairness first."
Another possible reason for the cancellation is McCurdy reportedly getting a lower salary than Grande, but Grande slammed this, saying that it's "absolutely ridiculous and false."
A representative, however, said that the "Sam &Cat" hiatus has nothing to do with the leaked photos. A statement, as reported by Fox News, said: "We are wrapping up what was an unusually long production cycle of 'Sam & Cat,' and everyone is understandably tired. We are going into our production hiatus next week which will give everyone on the show a much needed rest."
A number of episodes are yet to be filmed after the said hiatus, added the Nickelodeon rep. Fans will now just have to wait for an official announcement.
