There have been plenty of conspiracy theories revolving around LeBron James and what his true intentions really are this summer in the 2014 NBA Free Agency. Some suspected that he would join forces with Kobe in L.A, team up with Melo in Phoenix, or join the Rockets and create another formidable "Big 3" with Harden and Howard.
Because LeBron's decision is "up in the air", teams have been making salary cap maneuvers, shedding contracts via trade and amnesty moves, to make room for James and his expected max contract if he decides to sign with them. But what if this is just all a scam? What if LeBron was already planning to resign with the Heat with Wade and Bosh all along but made it looked like he was up fro grabs to deliberately mess up other teams?
Last week, plenty of articles and news ported that Wade and Bosh were "uncertain" of Jame's decision and that the Heat's "Big 3" were out of sync, etc. So here is a conspiracy theory - The "Big 3" have plotted together and made it sound like LeBron was thinking of leaving the Heat and that they were not united in their decisions this free agency. This made the impression on several teams that LeBron and Bosh were up for grabs, sending teams into a frenzy and forcing them to dump salaries and contracts to make room for the super stars.
As a result, teams have gutted their rosters to make a spot for James or Bosh thereby weakening them and later forcing them to scramble and overpay the left overs after James and Bosh decides to go back to the Heat. Now the Heat will face easier competition in the next season.
Right now, teams are already hesitant on signing other free agents with the hopes of landing LeBron or Bosh. The Rockets are reportedly offering Bosh a max contract with the premise that LeBron will sign with the Cavs and leave the Heat. Now Dallas offers Parsons a $45 million contract putting the Rockets in a difficult spot. Damage done to one contender.
Once LeBron and Bosh decides to resign with the Heat some time this week, teams who were originally in pursuit of the two Heat stars will be left with plenty of salary cap room but without a star to sign. They will be forced to compete on less sought FA's and overpay them in the process. Its a brilliant plan and a devious ploy to screw over the teams that are a threat to the Heat's championship aspirations next season.
They probably would risk the wrath of the fans once this happens but James may be used to it already. Those skeptical on whether LeBron would play for Dan Gilbert after their emotional break up fours summers ago would certainly consider this, and with the Cavs gutting their team and the Rockets backed on a corner, it appears that half half the mission is already completed.
But perhaps this may just be crazy speculation or maybe this is something that people have simply failed to see. We will know soon after the Decision 2.0 unfolds.
