Nowadays, video games are almost as expensive to produce as Hollywood films. The amount it costs to make games is usually a secret, and most of the costs are based on analyst estimates. Whenever specific numbers are released, they take marketing, packaging, and production as well. Here are some of the most expensive games that have ever been created.

1. Red Dead Redemption

This was one of Rockstar's creations to prove that it was more than just the creator of Grand Theft Auto. The game is set in the Old West, during the decline of the American Frontier in 1911. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw whose family is taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a bounty hunter. It has an open world environment wherein players can interact with the game world as they please. The game took more than 6 years to develop, and was delayed several times. According to the New York Times, the game cost around $100 million to produce. This was well worth it because the game was critically acclaimed and praised because of its visuals, gameplay, story, and other aspects.

2. Grand Theft Auto IV

It seems like Rockstar likes taking big risks on their video games, since at the time that GTA IV was released (2008), it was the most expensive game that has ever been produced according to Business Insider. It follows GTA's producer, Leslie Benzies, estimated the costs to be around $100 million. The game shattered sales records, selling 3.6 million copies in 24 hours and earning $310 million in the process.

3. Tomb Raider

Last year, Tomb Raider came out with a lot of hype. The game is the tenth Tomb Raider story. It explores the origin of the story of the game's main character, Lara Croft. The game cost around $102 million. Within 48 hours of its release, it sold around 1 million copies, and has sold around 6.5 million copies to this day.
