After five long years, "Boardwalk Empire" is coming to a close. But up until now, fans didn't know just when this close would be happening, knowing only that the show's final season would premiere sometime this fall.
Now, however, HBO has just revealed when the final season will begin airing.
The final season will air beginning September 7, 2014- however, HBO also revealed that the final season would only last for eight episodes, while the first four season have all ran for twelve. Right now, there is no information on why the final season was shortened.
As well, a new synopsis for the final season has just been released, confirming what we had previously learned about the fifth and final season- it will take place after a time jump, setting its characters in the midst of the Great Depression. The synopsis reads as follows:
"The first four seasons took place during the 1920s. In the final season, which takes place in the depths of the Depression in 1931, Nucky recalls his Atlantic City roots and plots a post-Prohibition future."
A teaser video (below) for the series previously hinted at a dark end for many of the series' characters, concluding with the tag line: "All Empires Fall." In real life, Nucky Thompson (although the character's real name was Nucky Johnson), played by Steve Buscemi, was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to a decade in jail in 1939. It is unknown if the series will end on this note, or if Johnson and the semi-fictional Thompson will even meet the same end.
Meanwhile, former series actor Michael Pitt thinks that his character's son should kill Nucky Thompson. Pitt, in an interview with E! Online, stated ""I think my son should assassinate Nucky Thompson. My son is about 11 now. Yeah, he needs assassinate Nucky."
Although, again, that's not how things played out in real life.
