Kerry Washington Talks Season Four of "Scandal:" "It's Pretty Crazy" [SPOILERS]

By

"Scandal" claimed three nominations when this year's Emmys were announced yesterday- Kerry Washington, Joe Morton and Kate Burton all have the chance to win a statuette, as Olivia Pope, Joe Morton and Kate Burton, respectively.

But that was last season. The last episode of ABC's "Scandal" to air ended on a cliffhanger, with Olivia Pope flying away on a planet with Jake Ballard, played by Scott Foley. Where they are headed is a complete mystery.

It's a mystery for the fans, and it's even a mystery for actress Kerry Washington, who has no idea where the storyling is headed in the fourth season.

Says Washington, in an interview with USA Today:

"We don't have a script yet. I don't even know if that plane is going to Turks and Caicos or maybe it had engine trouble and is in right back in D.C. I don't know where she's going. It's pretty crazy. You cant thrive with this material unless you're willing to embrace the unknown. I'm type A, hyper prepared - it challenges me to surrender to these writers."

Speaking to the LA Times, Washington also elaborated on how her character has evolved over the course of the show.

"It's funny - in Seasons 1 and 2, I felt like my work was really about wrapping my head around trying to balance how powerful she is at work with how powerless she is in her personal life. And then bringing in the role of daughter really helped me to understand both of those things. It made me aware that those parts of her are so fragile."

One cast member who will not be returning to the series, however, is Columbus Short, who was charged with felony battery in March, and subsequently left the cast a few weeks later.

"Scandal" is set to premiere its fourth season this fall.
