After all the buzz that Apple stirred with its upcoming sapphire covers, latest resports say that not everyone will probably get the chance to enjoy the innovation. According to the ChristianPost, iPhone6 fans who are looking forward for the new models which were supposed to feature the super durable Sapphire cover might be disappointed to know that the new material will only be used on the high-end versions of iPhone6.
MacRumors.com also reports that GT Advanced Technologies, Apple's sapphire material supplier, seem to be currently capable of producing the glass only for 45 million units of smartphones. This is according to Brian Huh, senior analyst at NPD DisplaySearch which recently hosted a Touch Conference in Seoul, Korea.
He continues, "Still, only the iPhone 6's most premium models may adopt it due to its high cost and a possible supply (set aside) for the iWatch." A research report from JPMorgan, on the other hand, says that the sapphire covers-which supposedly can withstand keys and knife tests-will only be available on the 128GB models. It goes on saying that the covers will only be used for either the 4.7 or 5.5-inch models and will be limited for only 10 million units.
Apple fans should also be ready to shell out more money just to get the sapphire glass covers. Due to multiple challenges when it comes to the production of the material, the glass covers are expected to be around $30-to $35 more expensive than Gorilla Glass.
Additionally, it is expected that Apple's latest innovation will be the start of the sapphire trend in the mobile market. Professionals suggest that the material will be even more popular come 2015. The demand for the new iPhone 6, moreover, is expected to be greater than that of the iPhone5s which sold 51 million during the first quarter of its release, the IBtimes reports. Apple supposedly already ordered 68 million units to prepare for their expected oncoming initial demand.
