NBA Rumors: Opening game for 2014-2015 Season to feature defending champions Spurs at the road against Cavaliers

By

The Boston Globe is spreading a very intriguing rumor involving the coming 2014-2015 NBA season and a block buster but possibly controversial opening game that features the defending NBA World Champions San Antonio Spurs on the road against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rumor has it that the NBA's season-opening game on TNT will be San Antonio at Cleveland, the first home game for LeBron James in his return to Cleveland and the first game for the defending NBA champion Spurs. The NBA schedule is expected to be released next month.

Seeing LeBron James back in a Cavaliers jersey should be an exciting way to kick things off next season but could be somewhat of an insult to the defending champions Spurs. Its unusual for any championship team to start their season on the road, although this is nothing new in the NBA, especially if it is against a brand new team like the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In each of the Miami Heat's back-to-back championship seasons, the team started their first game at home, where the players were awarded with their championship rings and the championship banner raised in the rafters in front of thousands of fans in attendance. It would simply appear unfair if the Spurs will not be given the same kind of treatment.

So if the rumor is true, then it would surely ignite some level of anger and hate from the entire Spurs nation. Here is what poundingtherock.com

If the league wants to shift its focus from southern Florida to northern Ohio, that's fine. But why should the Spurs have to be the visiting team and play second-banana for LeBron James' homecoming? They're the champs. Haven't they earned the right to host the season's first game? Wouldn't it be a shame for them to put together one of the most dominant postseasons the NBA has ever seen (winning their 16 games by a greater combined margin than any other champion in league history) only to have to put off their banner ceremony until after playing the league's newly-crowned marquee team on their home court?

But if you set aside the fact that it would be an injustice for a championship team to start their season on the road, a match up between the San Antonio Spurs and LeBron Jame's Cavaliers team in opening night will surely be amazing. LeBron James just got dismantled by the Spurs in a lopsided NBA Finals Series just last June. So if you look at it, LeBron will have another opportunity to avenge that bitter defeat but now with the young and talented Cavaliers team.
