Now, given the success of the past two "Thor" films, and the popularity of Chris Hemsworth, it seems overwhelmingly certain that Marvel will add at least one "Thor" sequel to this schedule. Where it goes, however, is still up in the air.
The latest report from Enstarz has "Thor 3" pegged for one of the three 2018 dates, citing that the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has a director, James Gunn, already attached, and the inclusion of a director means that "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is probably farther along than the next "Thor."
Enstarz also based their reports off an earlier take from Den of Geek!, which claims "Thor 3" may release on the May 5, 2017 date.
Between the two, it may be that 2017 is more likely for "Thor 3." Thor is immensely popular, and Marvel wont' want to sit on its hands and wait five years between the 2013 "Thor: The Dark World" and a date in 2018.
Also, while "Thor 3" may not have a director, it does have two screenwriters that have been working on the film since January. That news comes via CinemaBlend, who report that "Thor: The Dark World" screenwriter Chris Yost and producer Craig Kyle have been writing the screenplay for some time. January was months ago- given the speed with which Marvel is rolling out new films, it's safe to say the screenplay is probably close to complete.
In that case, a 2017 release date for "Thor 3" might not seem so far-fetched.
