When Marvel President Kevin Feige teased fans at this year's San Diego Comic-Con a footage of a bulkier version of Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) squaring off at a dusty battlefield, it was enough to create pandemonium in Hall H, Cinemablend said. Citing multiple reports, the footage was actually a concept art from Marvel Studios that director Joss Whedon demanded to have for the highly-anticipated follow-up "The Avengers: Age of Ultron."
When Ruffalo was asked about that jaw-dropping footage, he somewhat downplayed whatever tension his and Downey's superhero characters have between them in the sequel.
"It's, oddly enough, a much bigger movie than Avengers One was. It's a little bit darker. It's - we get a lot deeper into the character now, since we established them in the first one, so we get to cover a lot more ground.Ultron's incredible. There's more stuff with Banner and Tony Stark, more "Science Bros" stuff. And it's pretty sweeping, it's pretty epic," Ruffalo said as quoted by Bustle.
Downey also shared his two cents to Hitfix about that fight scene, and said, "It can't just be a good fight, it's gotta be about something. And the great thing in 'Age of Ultron' is, that fight between [the Hulk and Tony Stark] is, nobody wins when two people who are friends fight."
We cannot think of any reason why Iron Man and Hulk would be turning against each other, considering that they have a bigger foe to defeat: Thanos (Josh Brolin). On the other hand, Feige might have provided the very answer on why Iron Man and the Hulk will be fighting in the upcoming film.
Referring to the conclusion of "Captain America: Winter Soldier," he said at Comic-Con, "S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone - for people who are following along. S.H.I.E.L.D. was disbanded and brought down at the end of The Winter Soldier because it turned out to not be the best organization ever. So Tony's bank-rolling The Avengers now. And he's bank-rolling their headquarters. So it's now Avengers Tower."
Given the fact that the Hulk does not take any orders, and with Stark bearing the brunt of leading the Avengers in their quest to protect the Earth from Thanos, there is no doubt that the onscreen buddies would clash on the big screen.
