"The Winter Soldier" is named by pop culture critic website, What Culture as one of the coolest characters Marvel has introduced. According to the website, The Winter Soldier plays an effective role as a villain, but when his backstory was shown, fans readily reacted with sympathy to the character.
Here is an excerpt from what the website has to say about the Winter Soldier:
"Everyone loves a sympathetic villain; it's the mark of a well-rounded antagonist that viewers can feel sorry for him or her at some point. With the Winter Soldier, you almost find yourself feeling sorrier for poor, brainwashed Bucky Barnes than you ever do Steve Rogers. Having your body preserved and experimented upon, your mind wiped, your memories stolen, your name erased, and then being used as an assassination tool for decades sure beats being stood up by Tony Stark on New Year's Eve, at the very least."
The article highlighted a number of reasons as to why the Winter Soldier is different from any other villains. As the website suggested, fans should look forward to seeing how Marvel should present the transition of the character from a villain to a possible hero.
Meanwhile, "Winter Soldier" directors Anthony and Joe Russo, are picking the story back up with the third "Captain America" movie. In an interview with MTV, the Russos revealed a set of questions that will drive the story of the upcoming sequel.
"Is the Winter Soldier the world's most dangerous assassin that's ever lived or the world's longest serving P.O.W.?" Anthony asked.
"Is he responsible for his actions since he was turned into the Winter Soldier, or is he innocent by reason of insanity? Where does this character live now? Is he ever going to be acceptable again to Cap in the way he once was, before he was the Winter Soldier? Those are the really complicated relationship questions and philosophical questions and emotional questions that intrigued us moving forward," he added.
The Russos did not reveal who the villain will be, nor hinted directly that the Winter Soldier to assume Captain America's role. However, the questions posed by the directors, somewhat suggest where the drama of the story will lead to.
According to Air Herald, "Captain America 3" is scheduled to release on May 6, 2016, with both Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan returning for the role as Captain America and the Winter Soldier, respectively. Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jeremy Renner are also expected to appear in the movie.
