Marvel News: "Guardians of the Galaxy" Gets a Sequel in 2017, May Replace "The Avengers" as Marvel's Biggest Superheroes

By

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is going to take the movie world by storm. Technically, it already has- the film was released in August and has already crushed the box office. It's come at number one at the box office four times already, and is the highest-grossing domestic film of the year (don't assume that'll last, though- "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1" will probably reign supreme in a few months).

And now the film's already got a sequel- KpopStarz reports that "Guardians of the Galaxy" has been given the greenlight for a sequel, and that "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will be releasing on July 28, 2017.

The news was then confirmed by "Guardians" director James Gunn, who posted the following message on Twitter:

"Yes, I'm writing and directing the sequel to #GuardiansoftheGalaxy for theaters July 28 2017. But first go see the first one out next week!"

So it's official. But what KpopStarz is also reporting is that Marvel may be prepping "Guardians" to overshadow The Avengers, and take over as the franchise's flagship superhero team.

The site has a quote from Disney president Bob Iger, who seems to say the same:

"This August 1st, we're looking forward to introducing the world to more fantastic Marvel storytelling, with a great cast of new characters in 'Guardians of the Galaxy', which we screened last week and we believe it has strong franchise potential."

And just in case that wasn't enough, the wrestling news publication PW Mania reports that Dave Bautista, who played Drax the Destroyed in "Guardians," would have a major role in the upcoming "Avengers 3."

Which would make sense, given that it's long been rumored that "Avengers 3" would finally see the Avengers throw down with Thanos, and in the comics Drax is the sworn enemy of Thanos (something we saw a little of in "Guardians").

And that appearance would provide the perfect launching point for "Guardians" to take over "The Avengers."

Check back soon for more "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers" news.
