More than two weeks ago, a clip of the highly-anticipated follow-up movie to the "Avengers" was released online. To the delight of Marvel comic and cinematic fans everywhere, we were introduced to what comic book storyline would Joss Whedon et al would be using for "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
For those who have failed to see the clip, the video showed shots of new characters Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), ComicBook.com noted. Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johannsen, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., and Mark Ruffalo all return for the sequel as Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk/Bruce Banner.
One entity who was not happy with the reception the clip received was Marvel itself.
Early last week, the entertainment company has filed a subpoena in the US District Court in San Francisco against Google in the hopes of unmasking the perpetrator who had leaked the clip, CNET said. The Inquisitr noted that the official trailer of "Avengers 2" was intended to be used to boost up ratings of Marvel's fledging television franchise, "Agents of SHIELD." The television show, despite its initial promise in the first season, debuted to lackluster ratings since September 23rd, the site noted. Marvel immediately released an official version of the trailer, but it did not garner the response it had wanted if there was no leak in the first place.
According to Marvel's subpoena, a person who used the name "John Gazelle" published the clip on a Google Drive account, and that it has alreayd sent a request to the search engine giant to take the clip down. Moreover, Marvel is requesting for the user's IP address and his YouTube and Google+ accounts.
Given the success of a similar case by an entertainment company early this year, Marvel has a bigger chance of getting what it wants in court. The Guardian noted that Lionsgate was able to successfully subpoenaed the search engine about host sites that provided downloads to the Sylvester Stallone-starrer "Expendables 3."
