The year-end award show season in South Korea has officially started, with "MelOn Music Awards 2014" kicking off later today. The award ceremony is one of the most anticipated events in the K-pop scene this year.
The "MelOn Music Awards" give recognition to artists based on their album sales as well as online votes from fans from all over the world. Some of the most coveted awards to be given are "Song of the Year," "Album of the Year," "Rookie of the Year," and "Artist of the Year."
According to KpopStars, MelOn will be giving a new award this year called "Web Users' Favorite." The award will be given to the K-pop artist with the most online followers. Artists competing for the award include EXO, B1A4, BEAST, INFINITE, and WINNER.
In addition, fans are looking forward to know who will take home the prestigious "Best Idol of the Year" award. This is because the lineup of artists who are nominated for the award includes some of the biggest names in the K-pop scene today, including EXO, 2NE1, Big Bang's Taeyang, BEAST, IU, SISTAR, WINNER, Girl's Day, g.o.d, and Akdong Musician.
Meanwhile, the lineup of performers is another reason for fans to watch out for in the event. The second batch of performers was recently revealed to be female idol group A Pink, as well as chart-topping duos Soyou & JungGiGo and Raina & San E.
Other than A Pink's upcoming comeback scheduled a few days after the award show, the idol group made waves this year for their success in the music industry. "Mr. Chu," which is the title track of the group's 4th EP "Pink Blossom" became a chart-topping hit. The track earned A Pink six wins in music shows, according to reports.
SISTAR's Soyou's collaboration with hip-hop singer JungGiGo for "Some" also became a huge success. The song ranked no.1 in nine different music charts and stayed the top spot on Billboard's K-Pop Hot 100 for six weeks.
After School's Raina and rapper San E also shared the same story with the previous duo "A Midsummer Night's Sweetness."
The artists will join the stage with previously confirmed performers such as Big Bang's Taeyang, IU, SISTAR, Girl's Day, WINNER, and BEAST.
The award ceremony will start at 10 p.m. (KST) at the Gymnastics Stadium in Olympic Park in Seoul. It will be broadcast through different MBC channels in Korea.Fans around the globe can also catch the show through live stream on 1theK YouTube channel.
