NBA Trade Rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers to acquire Corey Brewer from the Minnesota Timberwolves

By

Swing man Corey Brower has been solid overall since returning to Minnesota in 2013, but the Timberwolves are apparently shopping him for future assets as the team attempts to accelerate its rebuilding process. Two of the teams who are reportedly interested in the 28-year-old guard/forward are the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets according to a report Marc Stein of ESPN:

Sources told ESPN.com that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets have emerged as the most serious suitors for Brewer, whose arrival would be a notable boost for either team in terms of depth.

"The Cavaliers have a trade exception large enough to absorb Brewer's $4.7 million salary," Stein mentioned in his report. This simply means that Cleveland, who is reportedly in trade talks with the Timberwolves, can easily bring in Brewer from Minnesota in exchange for future draft picks.

Giving up Brewer for future picks might appear like a short term loss for the Timberwolves as it would instantly diminish their depth in the wing position. The move, however, would help the team moving forward according to R. Cory Smith of Bleacher Report:

Kevin Martin has been the main shooting guard for Minnesota this season, so the team would simply lose some depth if Brewer is dealt away. The franchise is looking to build around its young talent, with Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Anthony Bennett on the roster, so a trade might further benefit the team moving forward.

If Brewer does get dealt to the Cavs, he would be reunited with his former teammate Kevin Love, with whom he shares a personal relationship after their well-chronicled success on the fast break. Brewer became one of the leagues most potent transition scorers last season mainly because of Love's exceptional outlet passes. Cleveland will also immediately add length, defense, and athleticism in their wing position with the arrival of Brewer helping them in their quest to win a title in their 2014-15 NBA campaign.
