The upcoming 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards is one of the most anticipated music award shows of the year. Taking place in Hong Kong on December 3, the 2014 MAMA will recognize some of this year's most outstanding artists in the K-pop industry.
As fans are looking forward to witness the biggest gatherings of stars, the award show's director, Han Dong Chul dished out some hints on what fans can expect on the event.
"For the collaboration stage this time, a legendary artist and a solo singer that was active in 2014 will collaborate. Also, girl groups had a big impact this year. There will be an intense sexy battle," said the director during the award show's press conference at the CJ E&M Center. Producers of the show also attended the event, Allkpop reports.
The theme of this year's MAMA is "Beat TV, 2014 MAMA," which means the event would break the TV to enjoy, share, and communicate through music.
Meanwhile, voting for the awards is ongoing. As of November 17, the total number of participating votes has reached to a whopping 25,000,000.
For some ranking updates, WINNER remains in a tough battle with GOT7 for the Best New Artist award. YG's rookie group, WINNER, has received 36.4% of votes while JYP's rookie group GOT7 is in close second with 36.1%.
For Best Male Artist, Big Bang's Taeyang remains strong in lead with 37.4% followed by Rain with 24.9%. He is also in the lead for the Best Male Vocal Performance award for his "Eyes, Nose, Lips."
One of the most surprising developments, however, is Super Junior losing its lead to younger label mates and megagroup, EXO, for the Best Male Group category. SuJu has previously been gaining solid lead since the start of the voting, closely tailed behind by EXO. Known for their huge following, EXO has now received 31.5% of votes, a matter of 0.2% of votes higher than that of Super Junior.
EXO-L, the official fanbase of EXO, seems to be doubling their efforts to support the group despite controversies the group has been through this year. In fact, the group also regained the top spot in the UnionPay Artist of the Year award. The idol group has received 22.4% of votes, with former lead WINNER now on second place with 22.2%.
The now 10-member group is also leading in the UnionPay Song of the Year for "Overdose," receiving 23.8%. TVXQ's "Something" and Taeyang's "Eyes, Nose, Lips" are in the second and third place with 16.7% and 14.5% of votes, respectively.
Fans can vote their favorite K-pop artists until December 2.
