'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2' Update: James Gunn says Rocket and Groot will have own movie? Director wants more of Nebula in sequel, no new characters

Who wants "Guardians of The Galaxy" stars Rocket and Groot to have their own standalone movie? Director James Gunn is clearly liking the idea, according to an interview with ComicBook.com.

Gunn told the site that although he cannot pick any favorites from the ragtag team of intergalaxy bandits/heroes, he believes that the odd duo might get their spinoff.

"I'd like to see solo features from all of them. Obviously there's a great Rocket and Groot movie that could come out of this. I love many of the characters. I love all these characters so much it's hard to say who I would like to see made into a solo movie by someone else. It depends on who that someone else is. The truth is, I'd rather not see a solo movie made poorly by someone who didn't understand the character and whose heart wasn't in it," he said.

Meanwhile, Yahoo had a separate interview with Gunn about Marvel's future plans to do a sequel for "Guardians of the Galaxy. Yahoo talked about Nebula, who was played by one of this summer's breakout stars, Karen Gillan. Gunn gushed about Gillan's character and the actress's dedication to the role and said, "I love Nebula. I fell in love with the design of Nebula. I cast the role around that design. I fell in love with Karen [Gillan] as a person, and I love the character of Nebula. She's the one that you really dig because she's the cool one that we need to get more of. I hope to god that we get a chance to see a lot more of Nebula [in future ‘Guardians' films]."

Although Marvel has not revealed anything yet for the sequel, which has been greenlighted for a July 28, 2017 release date, Gunn has been busy assuring fans of the comic franchise that in the cinematic universe, Chris Pratt's character will still be the only earthling featured so far.

Referring to the suggestion that a Marvel character named Nova (who is an earthling) would be introduced in the sequel, Gunn said as quoted by Screenrant, "I don't want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans. Sorry if that upsets you... And I have nothing against Nova in future movies, but it doesn't serve the movie right this moment."
