Wonder Girls’ Sunye says she is not returning to the entertainment industry to focus on missionary works; JYP refutes saying singer’s statement was misinterpreted

Sunye of Wonder Girls officially confirmed her retirement from the entertainment industry, despite previous denials from her record label, JYP Entertainment.

In an interview with Joongang Ilbo's US branch during a non-profit church concert surfaced revealing Sunye's future plans. "Return to the entertainment industry? That won't ever happen!" she said.

According to Koreaboo, an article that goes with the title "The emptiness of popularity, I wish to spend my life resolving myself through the gospel and in Jesus," explains the singer's decision to dedicate her life to missionary work.

In the said interview, Sunye shared that though she has always been religious since she was young, the first time she discovered her passion and "met Jesus on a deep, personal level" was during American debut of their hit single "Nobody."

Sunye revealed, "Even when I reached the top as a singer, I couldn't fill the emptiness in me, but after I met Christ, my life changed. I realized the 'original sin' is in living my life for myself and not for Jesus."

The artist shocked her fans in March after she said she will continue working as a missionary in Haiti for five years. She said, "I enjoyed my life as a singer but I wish to be loved with in Jesus as a daughter and share that love. I plan to seek what is eternal and spend my life spreading the word of God."

Meanwhile, Soompi reported that JYP Entertainment has already spoken about Sunye's statement. A representative from JYP said on December 10, "It seems that Sunye talked about her future-not immediate-plans during an event at a church in the United States. From the agency's position, Sunye still remains a Wonder Girls member. It's not at all true that Sunye is leaving the Wonder Girls or that the team will be disbanded. Nothing has changed."

Soompi noted that the artist's words were misinterpreted, leaving fan with speculations that Sunye is immediately wanting to end her career as a singer.

The singer spent six years as a trainee before she debuted in 2007 as a member of Wonder Girls under JYP Entertainment. In early 2013, Sunye married Canadian-born Korean James Park in New York. The couple welcomed their first child in October the same year.

According to KpopStars, Sunye just renewed her contract with the record JYP Entertainment and the idol group in January.

Meanwhile fans who are confused with the seeming contradicting statements between Sunye and JYP are hoping for the best.
