When "Red Band Society" debuted on FOX, a series revolving around children who are battling for their lives due to life-threatening medical emergencies seemed to have an appeal to television viewers who have grown to love heart-tugging family dramas like "Parenthood." But the hospital drama's low ratings have reportedly prompted FOX to reconsider issuing another season for "Red Band Society" that the network is said to be cancelling the series.
Citing sources, The Hollywood Reporter said top network executives decided not to order additional episodes after the 13th one. Supposedly, Fox and producer ABC Studios have not agreed on the licensing fees, reducing the possibility of the show's albeit small but young fan base to see more of the hospital drama. This was obvious when the show was absent from the midseason lineup of FOX announced recently.
In September, show executive producer Rina Mimoun told THR then, ""There is a possibility for a pickup, but my understanding is if we didn't get a back order, that certainly doesn't mean we won't get a second season. I do think there's something about this show that if you stretch it out too long, you stretch the believability."
However, Mimoun seemed to have a change of heart for the show when she was asked by TV Guide about "Red Band Society" getting the axe. She said about the show's mid-season finale, "If [this episode] is the end, it will definitely leave you hanging! I have always believed the show would work best in shorter cycles. Keeping the kids in the hospital for too long begins to stretch credibility. Creatively, this felt like the best decision. But I'm hopeful the final three episodes of our first season will air in the new year. As far as a second season, I know there are more stories to tell at Ocean Park Hospital and with Nurse Jackson (Octavia Spencer) at the helm, I feel like anything is possible!"
This was seconded by one of the show's stars, Zoe Levin. Levin, who plays Kara Souders in the series, told Fanbolt on what viewers should anticipate in the series regarding her complicated relationship with Hunter (Daren Kagasoff), "It's an interesting dynamic because he's really the only one that doesn't stand for Kara's BS, so he doesn't take her crap and that kind of throws her off. I think that's what kind of intrigues her about him."
She also talked about her character's relationship with Emma (Ciara Bravo) and added, "We both really test each other, and we take to heart what each other has to say. It's interesting because it always ends up affecting our characters in their own lives and their own relationships. We have some great scenes coming up."
