What Does "Captain America: Civil War's" Working Title Mean for the Film's Story?

By

Most comic book fans can figure out where the plot of "Captain America: Civil War" is headed. Tony Stark wants superheroes to register their identities with the government. Steve Rogers would prefer they didn't.

And the massive superhero-on-superhero war blows up from there.

But until the film's 2016 release, fans are already debating the minor details of the plot online.

Master Herald has speculated on the role of the film's working title- "Sputnik"- and how it might affect the film's plot. The obvious connection here is the Winter Soldier, Captain America's former sidekick-turned-villain-turned-nomad, who's gone off the radar since the end of the second film.

Marvel has confirmed that Winter Soldier will play a major role in the next "Captain America" film. Obviously, part of this stems from the end of "The Winter Soldier," where Captain America and the Falcon make a plan to travel the country in search of the Winter Soldier.

But Winter Soldier may also play into the rivalry between Stark and Rogers- as revealed in "The Winter Soldier," the Winter Soldier assassinated Tony Stark's father in the past. This might not be the event that sets off the Marvel Civil War (in the comics, it was a superhero who accidentally blew up a school) but it might add to the tension between the two lead heroes.

MoviePilot has also found clues about the film in past Marvel movies. In "Iron Man 2," there's a brief moment where Tony Stark casually disregards Captain America's shield, and another in "The Avengers" where the two superheroes have a brief spat. It's not much, but it is a quick taste of what we'll most likely be seeing in "Captain America: Civil War."

International Business Times predicts we'll see the first trailer for "Civil War" with the next "Avengers" film, but it may be more likely to premiere in late 2015- that's when the first "Avengers: Age of Ultron" trailer debuted.

Check back soon for the latest on "Captain America: Civil War."
