Previously, Samsung confirmed that it will no longer be updating the Galaxy S3 to upcoming Android updates. Fortunately for third party providers, Samsung Galaxy S3 unit owners can still update their devices to the Lollipop firmware via the CyanogenMod based version and unofficial CM12 update. It is also important to note that the Android 5.0. 2 custom ROM is accessible to Galaxy S3 models such as the GT-I9300I and GT-I9301I.
XDA senior member Rox released the original version of the CM12 port. The developer provided the initial version last Christmas Eve. According to Android Origin, there have been significant changes on the build from the time of its initial release. Likewise, the site also noted that this is a noteworthy feat since the release and changes were made over the holidays.
However, similar to other custom ROM updates, users should be prepared to find some features lacking like with previous other alpha ports. For instance, in the current 5.0.2 ROM does not allow S3 units to use the NFC function. Likewise, audio coming through is not possible for the SIM card as well as the I9300I model of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo.
Samsung has released a number of S3 versions so some configurations may not be compatible with the custom firmware. For example, Samsung used several types of camera sensors for the S3 series. This means some people may be able to use their unit's camera when upgraded to 5.0.2 update but others may not.
For Samsung Galaxy S3 users who wish to try the Android 5.0 Lollipop update first, the new CyanogenMod based firmware is available. The software is from an XDA forum member who goes by the name pandasa 123. The custom ROM is based on the CM12 Series Alpha edition.
The update requires up to 226MB space. There are several minor issues to be resolved but users can expect the program to be functional enough according to Master Herald.
Disclaimer: Users cannot hold update provides responsible for what happens to their device units. People can upgrade at their own risk.
