"Ghostbusters" Embraces New All-Female Cast; Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones joins Calling amid Fans' Reaction to Film's Reboot

The "Ghostbusters" reboot, scheduled for a July 2016 release date, will show the combination of four comedic actresses-Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.

The announcement came from film director Paul Feig himself who on Tuesday posted uncaptioned photos of the four stars on Twitter.

Feig has already worked with McCarthy on "Bridesmaids" and the upcoming movie "Spy." McCarthy was one of the first names to come up when talks of the "Ghostbusters" movie started. Wiig is also a "Bridesmaids" alum. Jones is currently on "Top Five" and on "Saturday Night Live" along with McKinnon, who has been on since 2012. McKinnon, 31, is the only confirmed cast who is below 40.

However, reports say that the contract for Wiig, Jones, and McKinnon still need to be finalized, with negotiations underway. Everyone "is expected to sign on," says The Hollywood Reporter.

Feig already clarified that the movie is not a sequel, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"There are a lot of haters. I get bombarded every day on Twitter. It's kind of a drag but I get it. It's kind of a sacred thing that people grew up with," Feig mentions. However, he is steadfast with his decision. "I wanted us to put our stamp on how it might be if it happened for the first time, and how these various women deal with it. It felt better to me to be able to start it again."

The original movie's director, Ivan Reitman, is a producer for the reboot, while co-creator Dan Aykroyd apparently loves the current version of the script.

Aykroyd, who co-wrote the 1984 film, says: "The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the 'Ghostbusters' torch by these most magnificent women in comedy."

Aykroyd was also part of the original "Ghostbusters" movie, joined by Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, The Guardian shares.

"Ghostbusters" in 1984 earned $300m globally. Five years later, its sequel, "Ghostbusters II," came out. Ideas for the new movie started with plans to feature the original cast 30 years later, but the project was met with Murray's refusal to sign and Ramis' death last year.

Early on, Jennifer Lawrence, Alyssa Milano, Rebel Wilson, Emma Stone, and Elisa Dushku have also been linked with the project.

The movie is expected to be out July 22, 2016.
