"Avengers: Age of Ultron" is set to be one of the biggest- if not THE biggest- movie of the year. And naturally, most other films are quaking in its shadow. No other major film is releasing anywhere near the May 1, 2015 release date, for fear of getting crushed in what's nearly guaranteed to be a billion-dollar grossing film.
But "Age of Ultron" just might have some competition after all. Recently, it's been announced that the long-awaited fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight will be opening at the same time. But Marvel's not frightened in the slightest- according to ComicBook.com, the studio has no plans to move "Age of Ultron's" release date, and no hesitations about going up against what's easily the year's biggest boxing event.
According to some speculation, Mayweather/Pacquiao is set to make nearly $300 million when it airs, while the last "Avengers" film only pulled in $200 million in its opening weekend (although it's not like $200 million is something to snicker at). But, as ComicBook.com reports, the way boxing match sales work is far different than movie sales- not only are the prices far steeper, but a boxing match is one night, while "Age of Ultron" is nearly guaranteed to make huge numbers for the entire month of May.
However, there's still one major shift happening in "Age of Ultron's" release date. Entertainment Weekly reports that the film will be opening one week early, on April 24, in India. As well, it'll be opening in the UK before it gets to theaters in the United States. It's a practice that's becoming more commonplace, as international markets continue to spend more and more on Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. Naturally, Hollywood's starting to give back to the countries contributing huge portions of their profits.
"Age of Ultron" is bound to be incredible- director Joss Whedon has called the film "really stunning" and compares it to classic James Bond films (via International Business Times), and it's coasting on the huge wave of goodwill left from the first "Avengers" film. Whether you're getting in line opening weekend, or hopping on a jet to catch an early Indian release, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is going to be huge.
