Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update has been intermittently released to different smartphones, mobile carriers and regions since last month. In Samsung's line, the latest update Android 5.0 is now made available to Galaxy S2 and S3, Galaxy Note 3, 4 and Edge, Galaxy S5, S5 Mini and S5 Plus Galaxy Grand 2 and Galaxy S.
Although the update for some phones are neither officially released by Google nor Samsung nor any mobile carrier, come firmware experts have been too kind to develop the latest update.
For Samsung's 2012 flagship smartphone Galaxy S2 with model number GT-I9100, a new Fusion Android 5.0.2 Lollipop custom ROM has been released by Team Android based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) 5.0.2 Lollipop. It offers customizations options to boost device performance, appealing interface, shortcut for easy access to key apps, and more. It includes slim booth menu and privacy guard manager, network traffic, gesture anywhere control option, ad blocker, ADB notifications icon hide option, custom dpi, disabled immersive messages, XuiMod toast animations, caller blacklist option, and CM profiles.
To install, properly follow the given steps:
1. Download Fusion Android 5.0.2 Lollipop CM12 ROM and Google Apps into PC.
2. Connect Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 to PC via USB cord.
3. Place Android Lollipop zip file and Google Apps .zip file into the phone's SD card memory.
4. Turn off the device and disconnect from the PC.
5. Long press volume up, home and power buttons.
6. Wipe data/factory reset phone.
7. Tap Wipe cache partition.
8. Go to ClockworkMod and tap Advanced.
9. Tap Wipe Dalvik cache.
10. Go to main recovery screen and tap Install zip from SD card.
11. Tap Choose zip from sdcard.
12. Go to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop ROM .zip file in SD card and enter the installation process.
13. Repeat the same procedure to install Google Apps.
14. Navigate to +++++Go Back+++++.
15. Restart device.
It will just take a few minutes to complete the booting process. To confirm update go to Settings > About phone. For Galaxy S3 with model number I9300, the update can be downloaded via Paranoid Android 5.0 Alpha 1 ROM made XDA Developers using Boeffla kernel.
Boeffla kernel has to be flashed first to make it compatible with the latest Paranoid Android 5.0 ROM. However, since Alpha 1 ROM is still in development features may bring a few untested bugs or broken features.
To manually install, refer to process of Galaxy S2 update. For Galaxy S5 and S5 Plus with model number SM-G910F, the update started on March 9 in Nordic countries and is still live. Unexpectedly, this update jumps ahead of Android 5.0.1.
The rollout comes over Samsung Kies and over-the-air (OTA). To manually update the device, install Lollipop firmware using Odin flashing tool and check out the installation guide.
For Galaxy S5 Mini with model number SM-G800H, Team Android has not included the device for official update. However, an XDA contributor brought Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update via an unofficial build of CyanogenMod 12.
Working features include RIL for call and data mobile, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, audio, all sensors, GPS and softkeys. The camera, however, has not been made functional but will be addressed in the future release.
For changelog dated March 3, 2015, changes will include fixed sensors for proximity, auto rotations and light sensors, fixed menu app/recent app key, fixed dual SIM, fixed GPS (WIP), fixed SELINUX denials and merged with latest CM updates.
For Galaxy S5, only Verizon users have been lucky for now. Subscribers from T-Mobile, U.S. and AT&T as there is no announcement for the update yet. Android 5.0.2 will bring in significant bug fixes for Galaxy S5. To manually install the update, go to Settings > About phone > System updates > Check now.
For Galaxy Note 3, Note 4 and Note Edge, the Lollipop update is made available first in South Korea and Poland, while Samsung is in the process of updating it in other regions.
For Galaxy Grand 2, download can also be accessed via Cyanogen 12 ROM. Galaxy Grand 2 is among the mid-range phones of Samsung to receive the update. Android 5.0.2 in Galaxy Grand 2 is guaranteed stable and fully functional although unofficial.
The update brings in voice feature on the second SIM, FM Radio audio, disabled SELINUX, updated music player, gallery and default calendar, new default wallpaper and boot animation and Whisherpush (sms encryption). To install the update, refer the same process of Galaxy S2 above.
For Galaxy Tab S, it is the first tablet in the Samsung family to get the update according to a leaked build. The video with the leaked Galaxy Tab S with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop shows TouchWiz UI colors, animations and slides updated to the Material Design guidelines. The keyboard also has been updated, while a mute function was added.
To manually install the update, go to Settings > About device > Software updates > Check for software updates or via Kies by connecting the device to the PC using the USB data cable.
