Jimi Hendrix was able to work with Curtis Knight and Squires as a backing musician to their 1967 recording. Now that The Hendrix family was able to get the rights over the said studio record, they are planning to release a new Jimi Hendrix album, "You Can't Use My Name". The album will feature previously unreleased 1967 original Jimi Hendrix tracks including the "Gloomy Monday" single.
DO NOT USE MY NAME
Jimi Hendrix entered a recording contract with Ed Chaplin's PPX recording studio last 1967 wherein he will be a background musician for Curtis Knight and Squires. Hendrix was firm when he said to the producer that "When we do this thing, you can't put my name on the single."
In spite of the promise made by Chalpin, "Gloomy Monday" was later released and re-released with overdubbed guitar and sitar in a cash-grab compilation. However, the Hendrix family and Experience Hendrix LLC was able to get the rights over the 1967 master records after winning in an arduous lawsuit with PPX.
Thus, a Jimi Hendrix new album will be available this March 24 which will contain all the previous unreleased mid-60s work of the legendary musician. Appropriately titled as "You Can't Use My Name", the Hendrix family calls it a "first attempt to present this music in its original context."
"Gloomy Monday" will be featured in the upcoming album and it will include Jimi Hendrix's never before heard studio recording. The guitar icon said that he is just "a backing musician playing guitar" in his work with Curtis Knight and the Squires. He further explained that "I was always kept in the background, but I was thinking all the time about what I wanted to do."
