'Godzilla 2' to spin-off into animated series? 'Pacific Rim 2,' King Kong crossovers possible

By

Godzilla 2 is already on the horizon, although Gareth Edwards' upcoming monster movie sequel isn't set to premiere for several years- not until 2018. And the years between 2015 and 2018 could do a lot for the kaiju genre, potentially giving Godzilla 2 a much richer genre environment to spin Godzilla off into a number of new franchises. Perhaps another movie, a TV show or a cartoon? Anything's possible.

Making it more possible is the existence of Pacific Rim 2, as well as the upcoming Pacific Rim animated series that was announced alongside Guillermo del Toro's monster-vs-robot sequel. While we still don't know much about the Pacific Rim animated series, we know that it'll serve as a precursor to the events of Pacific Rim 2. According to Zak Penn, screenwriter for both Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim 2:

"[Guillermo del Toro's] got some amazing stuff that's in the animated series that definitely informs what's going on in the next movie."

That, along with a new kaiju film from Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo, could usher in a whole new age of kaiju movies- which could set the stage for a Godzilla animated series at some point. As well, there's also Kong: Skull Island, the upcoming King Kong prequel starring Tom Hiddleston and J.K. Simmons. Fans have been anxious to see Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla crossover into some kind of Godzilla vs King Kong movie- it might actually be easier for the two to merge if they were both involved in some kind of animated series. And if Pacific Rim already has an animated series... crossing the two of them into the Pacific Rim universe might not be that difficult. Of course, you'd probably have to give King Kong a bit of a size boost, considering he usually comes up to about Godzilla's knee.

All this is speculation, of course- we'll have to see what happens closer to Godzilla 2's premiere date, on June 8, 2018.
