'Friday the 13th' Reboot Coming from Michael Bay; Found-Footage Sequel Explore's Jason's Backstory

By

Just like Jason Voorhees, the Friday the 13th franchise can never be killed. And as proof, there's another Friday the 13th film on the way, with the first details on the new horror sequel having just been revealed online.

Thanks to Cinema Blend, here's what we know: the next Friday the 13th film is the 13th in the series (spooky, right?) and will attempt to explain why the murdering undead monster Jason Voorhees is invincible and cannot be killed. Technically, some of Jason's backstory has already been expained- that he was a boy who drowned when neglected by his camp counselors, and has been afraid of water ever since, and also comes back to life as an undead being that relentlessly hacks teenagers to pieces. But it's never been explained just why Jason's immortal- what supernatural forces caused him to become an undead killer. That's what this new Friday the 13th film will attempt to explain.

As well, the latest Friday the 13th installment will be shot in found footage style, presumably in an attempt to give the series a boost of newness after twelve previous installments. The title of the film is not yet known, but those in charge would be wise to include some kind of pun on this being the 13th film in the franchise.

Here are the other details we know about the latest Friday the 13th movie- it will be produced by Michael Bay's company, Platinum Dunes, along with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. The screenplay will be written by Hannibal writer Nick Antosca. And the release date will be May 13, 2016, because obviously a Friday the 13th movie has to release on the 13th. Will this new reboot be any good? Depends on if Bay and the others involved can think up a halfway decent backstory for Jason and his unkillable nature. If not, it'll just be another mediocre Friday the 13th sequel to throw on the very, very large pile.
