An Alien Nation has been rebooted for quite a while now- the original 1988 science fiction film was originally adapted into a television show, and it was rumored that the project would come to life again as another show. Now, we know that's not the case, and Alien Nation is officially being made into a movie reboot by Fox.
But will the stars of the original return to the film? It's an odd dilemma. Usually, reboots don't necessarily involve the original film's actors- for example, the reboot of 21 Jump Street starred Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill instead of the stars of the original series in an older version of the same timeline. However, it's usually the norm that the original actors show up for a cameo in some way. Again, using 21 Jump Street, Johnny Depp did show up in a fan-favorite cameo role.
Alien Nation, being a treasured movie by a lot of fans, would naturally require at least a few seconds' worth of screen time for original stars James Caan and Mandy Patinkin. And that's what the fans are demanding, according to io9. There's just one problem: according to the first reports about the film, it'll be a prequel of sorts, showing the first time in the Alien Nation franchise when aliens first visited Earth. Hopefully, the producers find a way to sneak in a Mandy Patinkin cameo somehow.
Here's what we know about the Alien Nation reboot. It's being made at 20th Century Fox by producer Gale Ann Hurd, as well, the film is being written by Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The franchise reboot is apparently inspired by Fox's previous Planet of the Apes reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was a tremendous success both with critics and audiences. The film is rumored to be competing with the upcoming Prometheus sequel at the box office.
