With Furious 7, fans of the long-running Fast & Furious franchise finally got to say goodbye to star Paul Walker, who was killed last year in a tragic car accident. Not surprisingly, Furious 7 is proving an enormous success at the box office, cruising to a gigantic #1 opening this weekend and having earned back $250 million already. But more than that, the film's final scene- the Fast & Furious franchise's tribute to Paul Walker- has been hugely popular online, becoming a viral sensation as fans say goodbye to the late actor.
In the scene (and this will, for obvious reasons, spoil the ending of Furious 7), the Fast & Furious crew (Walker, Vin Diesel, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez) are sitting on a beach, enjoying the sun, as Walker's character Brian O'Conner plays with his pregnant wife and child in the waves. Diesel's character Dom Torretto, realizes that O'Conner is better off with his family then in their street racing/heist/spy crew, and decides it's best if he silently leaves the beach.
But as he drives away, O'Conner pulls up in a car next to him, and the two share a goodbye before driving off on separate paths as the road splits apart. At this point, Vin Diesel speaks about Walker/O'Conner via voiceover, as clips from Walker's past Fast & Furious films play.
Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth wrote a song for the end of the film titled "See You Again," and the song's video (which contains clips from that final, much-talked-about Furious 7 scene) has quickly become a viral sensation. As Cinema Blend notes, this was likely done intentionally by Universal, who released the video as soon as possible to capitalize on the success of Furious 7 and the fans' love of Paul Walker.
We don't yet know what the future of the Fast & Furious franchise holds, but what we do know is that Furious 8 is a certainty. Keep an eye out for an official announcement from Universal.
