After appearing in several Marvel movie adaptations, the Black Widow character played by Scarlett Johansson may finally have a standalone film. Recent reports have surfaced that the actress' contract with Marvel has been changed to possibly make allowances for the making of a standalone film. This was revealed when she spoke to journalists while promoting the new Avengers movie.
"My contract has changed," said Johansson. "Marvel and myself didn't really know how the fans were gonna react to Black Widow the first time and how she was gonna be-they couldn't anticipate how they would want to use her or if they would want to use her." If the planned movie is turned into reality, it will mark the sixth time that the actress will play the role of Natasha Romanoff, a Russian spy operating under the codename Black Widow.
The character debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU in the 2010 film Iron Man 2. She was portrayed as an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent posing as Tony Stark's assistant. Her second appearance came in 2012 in the blockbuster The Avengers. In 2014, she also played a major role in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This year, Black Widow makes a return on the big screen with the sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron. Captain America: Civil War is another movie in development where Johansson will play the role of Black Widow for the fifth time.
For fans of the character, the waiting game starts for an official announcement of the Black Widow movie if it is indeed being planned. Meanwhile, the character's latest involvement in the MCU will be released in a couple of weeks as Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 1. The world premiere for the said movie was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on April 13 this year.
