In 2009, the James Cameron movie "Avatar" became a global phenomenon. 20th Century Fox is looking to capitalize on that popularity as the studio works on a sequel. The said movie will once again have James Cameron behind it as director and screenplay writer. Cameron is also reported to be very interested in making two more movies excluding this sequel.
Cameron stated that they are writing the story for three films. This would mean faster development for the third and fourth installment in this movie franchise if it gets to that point. Because of this monumental task, "Avatar 2's" scheduled release has been pushed back. It was first slated for a 2016 release.
The first Avatar film broke filming boundaries on its way to gross more than $2 billion worldwide. In the sequel, Cameron is looking to push the envelope further. It is reported that the talented director is looking to shoot at an even higher frame rate and have extensive underwater scenes. If the sequel is anything like the first film, it should revolutionize the way things are done in filmmaking.
While Cameron will be writing the story for the sequel, he will not be alone in that task as with the first movie. Josh Friedman who worked on the "War of the Worlds" screenplay will be helping to write the story for the Avatar sequel. Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno will be joining the two.
Furthermore, characters such as Jake Sully and Neyteri will be back according to reports. Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington who played the two characters are returning for "Avatar 2". Other names that have been attached to the sequel are that of Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. Both will be reprising their roles.
