In 1995, Kevin Smith came out with the movie "Mallrats" which was well received by the public. Years after, the filmmaker is assembling the original cast to bring to life a much-awaited sequel. Rumblings of a "Mallrats" sequel came about when Smith posted on his social media account the list of projects he is looking to complete this year and in 2016 ending the post with "...And after that? I smell a rat..." Shortly after that teaser, Smith posted again saying something about "putting the band back together".
Then the director posted pictures of the original cast members who have been contacted to appear in the sequel. Stan Lee, Joey Lauren Adams, Renee Humphrey, and Sven-Ole Thorsen are just some of the old crew are "going back to the Mall" as Smith puts it.
Production for the movie is expected to start this summer and Smith is still busy going around and collecting the old cast. Ben Affleck who has been cast to be Batman in the Warner Bros "Batman v Superman" film is yet to be officially confirmed for the sequel. "No word on Bat-fleck yet! It'll be fun to see if we can get him," said Kevin Smith on the podcast Hollywood Babble-On.
For fans of the original movie and comic book legend Stan Lee, the sequel could be a pleasant surprise. The director has confirmed that Lee would have a bigger role this time. The movie is set to be shot at the Eden Prairie Center according to Smith could be blown up in the movie.
The venue is scheduled to close down which forced Smith to start filming the Mallrats 2 as soon as possible. Of course, the director will reprise his role as Silent Bob while Jason Mewes will also be back taking the part of his partner Jay.
The expedited start of the "Mallrats" sequel shooting is surely a treat to fans of the original movie. The involvement of the old cast is just icing on the cake. Stay tuned for more news about movie in development.
