With all the clamor about the new "Star Wars" film, "Star Trek" must have been envious as actor Simon Pegg says he is currently working on the screenplay alongside Doug Jung for a "kick ass role" that will be played by Idris Elba. According to Pegg, it will be a never-before-seen character in the Trek series.
Contrary to the speculations, Elba is definitely not playing a Klingon and Pegg confirmed that he's not portraying anyone who is familiar at all. He recently told MTV: "It will be [an original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we're out there. We don't always have to keep bumping into the same people... So we're gonna try and reflect that in the movie." He will also reprise his role as Montgomery Scott also known as Scotty.
The "Star Trek" actor also opened up about his goal to capture the essence of the original film in the new sequel, promising that the next instalment will be filled with adventure. "We can invest in it the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what it is, and so what we're hoping to do is make a Star Trek for today that doesn't forget where it came from," Pegg divulged.
The English actor is also a huge "Star Wars" fan, so when asked if he thought the new film would be better than George Lucas' prequels, he immediately responded: "I think the trailer is better than all of the prequels combined." Enough said.
Meanwhile, it has been two years since the sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" arrived in cinemas and the pre-production for the new film is now gearing. In fact, "Fast & Furious 6" director Justin Lin will be handling the new installment and will start filming in June.
Although "Star Trek 3" has no fitting title yet, it already amassed a stellar cast ready to take part in the action including Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and among others who will be reprising their respective roles. The new installment is due to release on July 8, 2016.
