Last week, it was announced that David Finch will no longer be working on the sequel to "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". The announcement could be a signal that Sony is ready to start moving the project along. Although the studio is yet to name other actors for the projected sequel, it has been rumored that Rooney Mara will be reprising her role as Lisbeth Salander.
Mara did delivered a stellar performance in first movie as evidenced by a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. And it comes as no surprise that the actress has been contacting Sony Pictures for a long time about a possible sequel.
Mara's emails back in 2011 to then Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairperson Amy Pascal were leaked by WikiLeaks. In it, Mara told Pascal how much the character meant to her.
With reports that the sequel drawing heavily from the next two books in the Millennium series, fans of the books would already have a good idea for the movie's plot. "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest" are the second and third books in the series.
Meanwhile, a fourth book, "The Girl in the Spider's Web", is expected to be the backbone for a third movie. Both books tell the story of Lisbeth's adventure after the events in the first film.
The recent rumblings about a possible sequel started when it was announced that a fourth book in the series is in the works. The said book written by David Lagercrantz will be the first book in the series not written by its creator Stieg Larsson.
"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" might have captured the hearts of many viewers and critics alike but it was fairly underwhelming in the box office. This is probably the biggest reason why Sony was not too keen in developing a sequel. That is, until now.
