The conclusion of the third season of "The Americans" TV series created a great setup for the fourth season. Last March, FX announced that they are picking up another season for the Cold War thriller which will run for 13 episodes.
The third season ended with Paige Jennings played by Holly Taylor admitting to her pastor that her parents are Russians. The scene did not show how it compromised the Jennings which makes it a great jumping off point for the fourth season.
Paige Jennings' father meanwhile looks like he's about to tell his wife that he has had enough of being a spy. Philip played by Matthew Rhys has been portrayed to be slowly disassociating himself from the spy game leading up to the season finale. How his wife Elizabeth would react to this development could be one of the surprises in the fourth season.
Another character to follow in the new "The Americans" season is Stan Beeman played by Noah Emmerich. He is now no longer subjected to FBI red tape which means he has a lot of time now to pursue his own agenda regarding the KGB.
Executive Producer Joel Fields and co-writer Joe Weisberg are keeping their silence when it comes to the plot for the fourth season. Fields though have gone on record saying that the fourth season would have plenty of surprises. This means that the Jennings' lives will be even more complicated. Fields also said in a Wall Street Journal interview that the fourth season would focus on the crisis faced by the major characters.
While the show has not been stellar as far as drawing viewers, FX believes that the positive reviews from critics would help drum up interest in the show hence the extension. The third season has achieved better response from critics compared to the first two seasons.
