Orange is the New Black (OITNB) returns to television for Season 3 with a new inmate that bears a resemblance or two to DIY diva Martha Stewart.
The Season 3 teaser from showrunner Jenji Kohan was revealed to Time during the Time 100 Gala.
Stewart, American television's lifestyle and home planning guru, served a 5-month sentence in a West Virginia jail in 2004 for conspiracy and obstruction charges in connection with an insider trading case.
The Time reports that in the OITNB book that inspired the Netflix drama series, writer Piper Kerman wrote about how Stewart was nearly sent to her Danbury prison. The Feds sent Stewart elsewhere because the Connecticut facility was too accessible to the news media, quotes AV Club.
Kohan admitted taking liberties with the character, making M. Diddy (Stewart's alias in the book) Southern instead of from New Jersey.
Craft Queen Stewart was also at the Time Gala and admitted she had not watched OITNB. Upon being told of the new character on TV that is inspired by her jail time persona Stewart said, "I'll look at it."
OITNB is a Netflix original series based on the book of the same title about Piper Chapman, a public relations executive with a career and a fiancé who has to trade her power suits for an inmate's orange jumpsuit after she is convicted of involvement in the drug deals of a girlfriend a decade before.
Chapman is sentenced to fifteen months in a minimum-security women's prison in Litchfield Penitentiary where she adjusts to life behind bars, meets, and befriends the most interesting characters.
OITNB stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, Laura Prepon as Alex Vause, Uzo Aduba as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren, Natasha Lyonne as Nicole "Nicky" Nichols, and Taryn Manning as Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett.
Orange is the New Black Season 3 premieres on Netflix on June 12.
