Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd was hit by a truck while taking a call on the road and did not survive his injuries. Many fans were devastated after Patrick Dempsey died in Grey's Anatomy Season 11. And one of these fans, Courtney Williams was inspired to start a Change.org petition -- and get 15,000 fans to sign it.
"You do not have someone survive a mass murderer, a plane crash, A FREAKING PLANE CRASH, AND A crushed hand, as a neurosurgeon...just to kill them off on a BEAUTIFUL DAY!! Seriously? SERIOUSLY SHONDA?! SERIOUSLY MS. RHIMES!?!?!?!?!" according to Williams' petition letter to Shonda Rhimes.
As of As of Monday, April 27, Williams had inspired more than 16,750 fans to join in her grief and beg ABC to reinstate McDreamy. "It's like you've killed the President of Grey's Anatomy! The Fans are ready to serve you papers and charge you with the Patriot Act," argued Williams.
But despite fans' hopeful petitioning, Patrick Dempsey isn't heartbroken at all. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said "It just sort of evolved. It just kind of happened. It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be," Dempsey said. "Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out."
But unfortunately for fans still hopeful that Derek might somehow miraculously return, Rhimes revealed she has no desire to resurrect the handsome surgeon. There's no crazy plot twist. Derek Shepherd really is dead. "Now, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and the entire 'Grey's Anatomy' family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) would say: The carousel never stops turning," she said, adding her gratitude to the man who brought the character of Derek Shepherd to life.
Thankfully, it doesn't sound like Dempsey is gone from TV for good. He told Entertainment Weekly he's been in talks with NBC about a new spy thriller.
