Ready for a Gremins reboot featuring the strange but adorable creature named Gizmo?
If you were a child of the mid 1980s, you probably remember the movie about the cuddly furball who becomes the pet of a young bank clerk. The creature's so cute, but if exposed to even a drop of water, will spawn evil creatures. It will be recalled that the word 'Gremlins' has become a household name and common expression of those who saw the original film.
Three decades after the movie came out, news about the making of Gremlins 3 has resurfaced anew. The idea had repeatedly crossed producers' minds years ago, especially after the 1984 blockbuster film about a cuddly furball raked in $148 million, followed by the 1990 sequel that grossed $41 million. The franchise has been dormant since Gremlins 2:The New Batch was released. News of a possible Gremlins remake in 3D has floated around since 2010.
The questions that immediately come to mind are, 'who will pen the script?' and 'who will direct the Gremlins reboot?' Word has it that American screenwriter ("Red Eye," "Disturbia") will get a crack at writing the script. If reports prove to be true, Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus may again be part of the project as producers.
Another point of comparison of the original and the planned new flick is the technology that will be used for the cute Gremlin and his predatory cousins who wreak havoc all over the neighborhood/city. Movie insiders don't discount the use of computer-generated imagery or CGI animation. Back in the 1080s, former director Joe Dante noted that the prosaicness of the puppetry and all that stuff we had in the first two movies really defined those pictures."
As far as the central characters are concerned, former movie babe of the 80s Phoebe Cates was part of the original Gremlins film. Who will they feature in the Gremlins reboot?
For now, there are fan-based trailers and online sites compiling old and recent Gremlins 3 news. For the Gremlins reboot, will story elements from the well-loved original film be incorporated? How long will everything fall into place? Do let us know how you feel about a reboot of one of the great movies of the 80s.
