Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a potential Academy-award winning movie "The Revenant" helmed by last year's Oscar best director, Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film will focus on an injured trapper's quest to survive in wilderness after being betrayed by his companions. While the movie receives early positive reviews for Iñárritu's unconventional directing, some say that it could spark controversy on its portrayal of Native Americans.
"The Revenant" is set in 1823 and tells the painful story of betrayal between real-life American frontiersman, Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) and the men who were supposed to stay with him after he was attacked by a grizzly bear. His companions (Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson) robbed Glass of his rifle and abandoned him in the middle of nowhere. Despite the seemingly unsurpassable situation, the fur trapper survives and seeks revenge to those men who took advantage of him.
"Birdman" director Alejandro González Iñárritu's unique and creative strategy in directing can once again be seen in "The Revenant." It was reported that he led the film's production in a terrific ordeal hoping the physical pain that they felt while filming will transcend through the screens and be felt by the audience as well. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki have spent months in remote wilderness, shooting the film using nothing more than natural light.
The first footage of "The Revenant" was shown during the CinemaCon and boasts of its stunning and haunting shots. Despite being well received by the audience, a report say that one of the early controversies that the new Leonardo DiCaprio-starred film might face is its depiction of Native Americans. Based on the initial footage, the Native Americans appear to be the bad guys in the film.
"The Revenant" is based on Michael Punke's novel of the same title published in 2003.
The Iñárritu and DiCaprio combination is definitely a dream come true, with an outstanding actor giving life to a character helmed by an equally outstanding director. "The Revenant" boasts of its amazing shots and story based on a Michael Punke's novel about a trapper betrayed by his men then tracks them down on a vengeful mission. The film will drop on US theaters on December with a wide release on January 2016.
