'Project CARS' looks gorgeous in PS4, Xbox One, PC; Slightly Mad Studios' racing game gets rave reviews

With "Project CARS" set for release in a matter of hours internationally, a video was recently uploaded on YouTube that stress tested the game's frame rate on PS4 and Xbox One during career mode. Based on the gaming community's initial reviews, it would seem that Sony's PS4 made the visually brilliant game a bit more dazzling over its competitor Microsoft's Xbox One.

The "'Project CARS' PS4 vs Xbox One Career Mode Frame-Rate Test" that was recently uploaded on the Digital Foundry YouTube channel featured the stress test for next-generation gaming consoles. Apparently, PS4 took the lead on the stress test with Digital Foundry's analysis, based on a report from PlayStation Lifestyle.

Digital Foundry's summary report on "Project CARS" read that: "As with our initial hands-on, heavy rain is still the cause for the most sizable drops to 50fps and lower, while races with clear skies hold much closer to the target 60fps. It's also evident Xbox One struggles to match the PS4's performance levels in most scenarios, especially with a conga line of cars in tow, where Sony's platform typically takes a firm lead."

The stress test also measured the disk space "Project CARS" would be consuming on both next-generation consoles; the game took up around 19.5GB disk space for both PS4 and Xbox One with the day one update measuring at 817MB for PS4 and 482MB for Xbox One. Digital Foundry's report insisted that players download the day one update because "it's impossible to play anything besides one track in solo mode until the update is finished on either platform."

However, what really tipped the scales was when the "Project CARS" stress test went through the various individual effects and how these could affect the game's speed on both PS4 and Xbox One. It was the heavy rain effect that caused a significant drop from 60fps to 50fps or even lower, based on a report from WCCFTech. Apart from that, it was observed in Digital Foundry's test report that Xbox One struggled to match the performance of PS4, especially when there were a lot of cars racing on the screen.

Meanwhile, game developer Slightly Mad Studios also provided PS4 and Xbox One players a variety of features to use in "Project CARS:"

  • The largest track roster of any recent racing game with 110+ unique locations
  • A wide variety of motorsports including GT, Touring, Le Mans Prototypes, Karts, and modern Open Wheel and 80+ cars available at launch

  • Dynamic weather, pit stops, and pit strategy creation

  • Dynamic time of day and endurance races including the Le Mans 24H

  • World-class graphics running at 60 fps with up to 45 drivers onscreen

  • Next-gen physics running at 600 fps and deep telemetry & tuning features

  • Competitive multiplayer for up to 16 players and the ability to create public, private and friend-based lobbies with 'Join In Progress'

  • Asynchronous Time Trial with downloadable ghosts

  • Regularly-scheduled community events

  • Social connectivity with photo and replay modes powered by The Driver Network

  • Support for 30+ wheels, community apps, and virtual reality via Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus

  • Continual updates and further content after launch

On the other hand, "Project CARS" had been receiving amazing feedback since the review embargo for the game was lifted. The game's variety of features it would be offering in the single-player and multiplayer as well as its career mode were among its best assets, based on a reviews from Game Informer.

A portion of the Game Informer review read that:

"[The career mode] makes the game sound hardcore, but thanks to numerous customization options, it's only as hard as you want it to be. Race lap length, allowing restarts, and [skimming] portions of the race weekend help, and amenities like pre-set weather/time-of-day progression, customizable HUD, and pit strategy templates are also welcome. Furthermore, online races (allowing you to use the game's entire roster of cars) contain features like optional mechanical failure and a variable mix of A.I./human opponents. Community events centered [at] specific leaderboards make Project Car's online mode a capable component."

While great reports and rave reviews on "Project CARS" had been pouring in, anticipating players would be expecting the game on PS4, Xbox One and the PC in North America on May 08th. The game's Wii U edition would be launched on a later date.
