The "Call of Duty" franchise sales went up this first quarter based on the latest earnings call of Activision Blizzard. Also, an updated report on "Black Ops 3" shared that the game's movement system would "pick-up where Advanced Warfare" left-off.
Activision Blizzard reported on their latest earnings call that the "Call of Duty" franchise "increased by a double-digit percentage year-over-year," based on a report from GameZone. Add to that, Activision Blizzard attributed the rise on sales due to the "growing online revenues;" they added that "there has been early success of the new microtransaction offerings which have helped drive increased engagement and monetization."
Apart from that, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg talked about the upcoming "Black Ops 3," based on a report from Examiner. Hirshberg said that: "Creative quality. That third year allows us more time to create and innovate, and have the game be more polished. The three year cycle has allowed us to add more in each iteration. We're building on the successes of all Call of Duty games, the movement system picks up where Advanced Warfare left off and moves it forward." Aside from that, "Black Ops 3" would be bringing back Treyarch on the scene; the same company who produced the earlier "Black Ops" titles in the "Call of Duty" franchise.
Then again, not everyone seemed extremely excited with what has been going on with the "Call of Duty" franchise. In an opinion posted in Pause and Select, one player claimed that the "Call of Duty" franchise, particularly the Advance Warfare title, had been a rehash. The opinion article read that "ultimately I think that, despite all the talk about how COD: AW has updated the franchise, the game fails is in its ambition. Granted, the voice acting and motion capture work is amazing, but if it really wanted to push the boundaries of what the FPS genre can do it should take a leaf out of Spec Ops' book, rather than rehashing the same tired tropes that have already become cliché."
Despite the mixed reviews about the game coming from its players, the "Call of Duty" franchise was still able to make a lot of money in the first quarter; it would be expected to make more with the upcoming release of "Black Ops 3."
