The Last of Us 2 seems like a sure thing (just think about how well-received the first game was), but after several years it seems like Naughty Dog's priorities are in other places. The developer is currently devoting most of its time to Uncharted 4, and there's also a The Last of Us film in the works that is certainly keeping Naughty Dog busy.
So will they ever get around to The Last of Us 2?
According to a recent report, there's still a number of other hurdles before the studio would consider a The Last of Us sequel. According to the game's creators, they'd only move forward on a sequel if original voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson would agree to reprise their roles. And even then, the status of the second game is only "50/50" at best. And beyond that, recent rumors add that the potential storyline for The Last of Us 2 might not even involve Joel and Ellie, the characters voiced by Baker and Johnson. Quite a few hurdles, like we said.
Once Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us movie are taken care of, however, it might be a different story altogether. Unless Naughty Dog wants to move onto an entirely new IP, they might finally get around to giving us the The Last of Us sequel that so many of the game's fans are asking for.
But until then, at least there's Left Behind, the standalone DLC that Naughty Dog is releasing this month for both PS3 and PS4. The DLC will be available for download on May 12, and will cost $10. The DLC will also come packaged with a new trial version of Factions, the multiplayer mode for The Last of Us. Hopefully, amid all this DLC and multiplayer and movie news, we can actually get The Last of Us 2 at some point.
