Microsoft’s move in making Windows 10 as their last OS game-changer?

Jerry Nixon recently said during the Ignite Conference held at Chicago that Windows 10 would be Microsoft's last Windows OS version in order to bring continuous innovations and updates as well as giving value for consumers and business customers.

Microsoft would be making Windows 10 software as a service (SaaS), which is somewhat similar to Google Chrome. This will let users save money as they won't have to pay more just to keep their operating systems updated with new features.

Windows 10 is the last version of Windows OS

Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system could possibly be their last OS as Jerry Nixon recently said that they are not planning on any new Windows OS versions in the near future. He said, "Right now we're releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we're still working on Windows 10."

Nixon also divulged that Microsoft was secretly working on the base OS of Windows 10 by the release of Windows 8.1. The company is also said to be treating Windows as "a service" in the coming years, and that they will be making regular updates for Windows 10 instead of releasing new versions of their Windows OS.

A Microsoft spokesperson gave a statement to The Verge saying that Windows as a service will be "bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers." The spokesperson also clarified that the idea of Windows as a service is not about a future branding that Microsoft is speaking about as of this time. Instead, Windows 10 will be updated frequently and will be running various devices across PCs, phones, Surface Hub, HoloLens, and Xbox.

Further, Windows 10 as a service is said to be like Google Chrome, which gets updated regularly with version numbers.

The strategy about making Windows 10 "software as a service" (SaaS) reportedly has advantages, which are potentially game-changers. They are:

  • The company has the flexibility of launching Windows 10 in the market even if some of the features are not ready yet.
  • Reduce the fragmentation challenge by taking control on upgrade and upgrades. With the Windows 10, Microsoft could push with the ease all the latest and important updates into users without being noticed, offering a controlled and secured OS environment.
