The two biggest franchises in fighting game history- Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat- both have a massive new sequel ready. For Street Fighter, it's Ultra Street Fighter 4, which will release on Playstation 4 on May 26. For Mortal Kombat, it's Mortal Kombat X, which released on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC on April 14 (the game's also set to hit Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 later on this year).
Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have always had a fighting game rivalry going through the years, but could the two finally join together for a crossover game? Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise and the director of Mortal Kombat X, revealed that a crossover is possible, but not particularly likely at this time.
"There currently isn't a Mortal Kombat versus project in the works. There's a nostalgia side of me that would love to see a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter, if we were allowed to make an M-rated game. There's a novelty to that. But the chances of that happening are pretty low. It is a possibility but not a probability."
The M-rating is a point of contention, as Mortal Kombat games usually push the boundaries of how gory a game can be, while Street Fighter games aren't nearly as violent. Some middle ground would have to be found for a potential Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter crossover game. Maybe, the Mortal Kombat characters could still have their brutal fatalities, while the Street Fighter characters would score a win without horrifying decapitations?
Right now, fans will have to settle themselves with judging Mortal Kombat X and Ultra Street Fighter 4 against each other. According to some fans, Street Fighter's winning out in the current generation, with more characters and a lower price point. What do you think? Do you have a favorite fighting franchise?
