Various speculations started appearing when it was revealed that Martin Freeman would be joining the cast of characters in "Captain America: Civil War." However, Mark Millar, touted as "the mastermind" of the "Civil War" comic book storyline, reportedly hinted Freeman's role in the upcoming film, saying that it is something apparently "obvious."
A funeral scene is also expected in the "Captain America: Civil War," implying that a significant character is going to die in the sequel. Speculations point to five candidates, and one of them is Captain America himself or Hawkeye.
Martin Freeman's Role: J.A.R.V.I.S to Henry Gyrich
During Mark Millar's interview with Radio Times, he said that Freeman's character is "not a super-person, it's somebody who's..." He restrained from elaborating significant details, and instead said that "he's [Freeman] not going to be in costume."
Further, Millar tiptoed in giving details so as not to completely spoil the film and said, "Once you get to see it, it's obvious. All I'll say is, he's not [Captain America villain] the Red Skull."
He also admired Freeman's range of acting skills, and joked that Freeman could even play Hit-Girl. Further, others also commented that Freeman's character "always give off awkward, fish-out-of-water vibe" such as Bilbo Baggins ("Hobbit"), John Watson ("Sherlock" sidekick), or Arthur Dent ("The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy").
Analyzing Millar's statement, other reports hypothesize that Martin Freeman's "Civil War" character could be Henry Gyrich, which would be Freeman's another "fish-out-of-water vibe" playing as a "hard character." Henry Gyrich is a representative of the U.S. Government who becomes a source of discomfort in the side of The Avengers.
Another rumor said that he might be playing Everett Ross, who became T'Challa/Black Panther's friend. Everett Ross' involvement might help properly introduce T'Challa/Black Panther.

Another speculation leads to Freeman's role as the computer J.A.R.V.I.S. despite the fact that J.A.R.V.I.S. was "killed off" in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." To bring J.A.R.V.I.S. back, Tony Stark could just use one of his operating systems and power an upgraded version of J.A.R.V.I.S. This was reportedly due to Mark Millar's statement that Freeman won't be "in costume."
