"Captain Marvel" Movie Update: "Selma" Director Ava Duvernay To Direct First Marvel Female Superhero Movie?

By

"Selma" director Ava DuVernay was reportedly tagged to direct a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie and it would either be "Captain Marvel" or "Black Panther." Marvel is reportedly courting DuVernay to direct one of MCU's superhero movies.

Insiders are saying that since "Black Panther" will be out first, which will be on July 2018, Ava DuVernay might most likely direct the said film over "Captain Marvel." According to a report, the news that DuVernay is being recruited comes shortly after the American Civil Liberties Union alleged movie studios with intentional gender discrimination when it comes to hiring female directors.

True enough, an MCU movie has never been directed by a woman. Although there are no confirmations yet if DuVernay will be directing "Black Panther" or "Captain Marvel," an insider shared that MCU is intent on hiring an African-American director and also intent on hiring a woman for the "Captain Marvel" film.

Although there is no assurance yet that DuVernay will direct for MCU, a report suggests that the director is very interested to take on the project.

"Captain Marvel" follows the plot of a woman named Carol Danvers who receives powers from an alien. The movie will also be released by 2018 but is four months behind the "Black Panther" slated release. "Captain Marvel" is the first ever film by MCU where a female superhero is the star of the film. "Captain Marvel" will also be written by a female scriptwriter, Nicole Perlman, who also wrote "Guardians of the Galaxy."

After moving the audiences with "Selma," DuVernay took on a project with Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films as well as Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment. DuVernay made her directorial debut in 2008 when she released the documentary "This Is The Life."

"Captain Marvel" and "Black Panther" are two of the most anticipated films produced by MCU that will be released on 2018.
