Ready for a reboot of The Craft? It's just been confirmed that Sony is moving forward on a reboot of the cult '90s hit, about four teenage witches who use their powers against anyone they don't particularly care for at their high school. Naturally, things get very, very out of hand. The original film was released in 1996 and starred Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True as the four lead teenage witches. The Craft was directed by Andrew Fleming.
There are little details released about the new version of the craft, other than the person in charge- Leigh Janiak, who'll both write and direct the upcoming reboot. Janiak is a fairly untested filmmaker, but her one film has received a substantial amount of acclaim. That film would be Honeymoon, a horror thriller released last year that starred Rose Leslie (of Game of Thrones fame) and Harry Treadaway, as a couple trying to celebrate their honeymoon at a romantic cabin by the lake, but end up sucked into a strange (and eventually extremely gross) set of circumstances.
With Janiak writing and directing, Sony may want a reboot of The Craft that's a little more hard-edged than the original, a film that might err on the side of bloody violence. Or they could just have hired Janiak for her horror chops and want to keep the teen-centric aspect of the original film.
What do you think? Are you excited to see a remake of The Craft? Would you prefer the film to be just as teen-centric as the original, or do you want things to get a little gorier, a la The Honeymoon? There's no release date set in stone yet for the Craft reboot, but expect all those details (plus the cast and story details) in the next few months.
