An Apple customer received a notice that his 15-inch MacBook Pro would arrive on June 9, a day after the start of WWDC event. This was seen to be a "potential piece of evidence" that a June refresh of the 2015 MacBook Pro is going to happen. As to its processor, a Broadwell-powered MacBook Pro is expected to be released this year, with the Skylake-powered MacBook Pro on 2016.
A 2015 Broadwell MacBook Pro is expected to offer better power efficiency, improved CPU performance, and enhanced graphics.
A buyer gets a June 9 delivery of the 15-inch MacBook Pro
The MacRumors reader purchased a custom configured 15-inch model MacBook Pro on April 23, specifically a MacBook Pro with a 2.8 GHz processor and a 512 GB of storage. His order was first estimated to arrive on May, a two to three-week delivery. However, Apple reportedly pushed it back as far as seven weeks and told the customer that he would receive his MacBook Pro on June 9, just a day after the WWDC keynote.
This created speculations that a 2015 MacBook Pro is going to be refreshed on June. But it was also said that this could be a "coincidence" and that there might be no 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro launching on Apple's WWDC event.
Broadwell MacBook Pro in 2015 and Skylake MacBook Pro on 2016
In terms of its specifications, besides Force Touch, rumors are saying that the 2015 MacBook Pro would sport a Broadwell chip rather than Skylake is getting strong. This was due to Intel "quietly launching" their 14nm Broadwell processors and reportedly "started supplying OEMs with 5th Generation Processors."
The Motley Fool also reasoned that Apple would include Broadwell chips in the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro. Basing on Intel's release patterns of their processors, it was noted that the company does not roll out "all of the models of a given processor family at the same time."
Specifically, the Broadwell release pattern was recalled, noting that the first parts that went out in the market were the "2+2 configuration (two CPU cores, GT2 graphics) late last year." Then Intel rolled out 2+3 parts (two CPUs, GT3 graphics), and the next Broadwell part that is "supposed to be suitable to the 15-inch MacBook Pro" would be the 4+3e (four CPU cores, GT3 graphics, on-package memory).
Further, The Motley Fool speculates that this will be the same with Skylake processors. Hence, Skylake chips would be included on the 2016 MacBook Pro refresh. Intel was also seen planning the launch of the i7-5775C and i5-5675c for desktops in the Q2 2015, which are said to have the same silicon suitable for the 2015 MacBook Pro.
Since the second quarter ends in June, Intel is apparently ready to support the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro refresh at WWDC. If this happens, the MacRumors reader might have 4+3e Broadwell chips in the 2015 MacBook Pro on June that would offer a better power efficiency, improved CPU performance, and enhanced graphics.
Apple has yet to make official statements on the 2015 MacBook Pro.
