It's speculative but with PS5 release date failing to materialize after being touted as early as immediately after PS4's successful launching, certainly, it may hold water. Sony Inc. is mulling the launching of PS5 not because it can't but because it doesn't want to. Read on.
Let's face it, PS4 is nowhere near Android smartphones success. Not even close. But PS4 is Sony's flagship product cornering over 20-million strong loyal followers worldwide - mostly in the Western world. Marketing-wise it's therefore logical to widen this market. Not by introducing a new product but by enhancing the gaming experience of the current product - deeper and more realistic.
The answer: Virtual Reality.
In a recent report, the Japanese tech behemoth has pegged a date on its Virtual Reality plans in line with the PS4. It is coming out with Project Morpheus, Sony's answer to the ever-exploding world of VR as unveiled in the recent Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco this year. The timeframe of launch: as early as first half of 2016.
In its unveiling, the latest VR prototype showed the following features:
- 1920 x 1080 RGB OLED display
- 120hz refresh rate
- 5.7-inch display
- nine LEDs for positional tracking
Most certainly, it holds a lot of promise. As one recent review revealed, done by a Tech Crunch pundit who got himself entangled into the near-realistic imaginary world created by a Project Morpheus VR Headset paired with a Sony PS4.
His verdict: It could give Oculus (VR featured recently with Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge) a run for its money.
Initially, Project Morpheus was unveiled March last year featuring a unique VR experience. The enthusiasm that build up out of that event was fired up even more during the recent GDC in San Francisco.
And the Tech Cruncher had nothing but beautiful words for his VR experience:
"I think Sony has nailed the headset and software experience with Morpheus, cutting out a lot of the frustrations involved with headsets currently on the market."
What's left now is to line up a slew of interesting games and voila, this market could explode. With Project Morpheus blowing the lid wide open. Not far-out really.
With a lot of Sony's attention into Project Morpheus and its launch lined up, it's could be biding its time, making the most of PS4 before finally shaking the market up with an ever-so-gorgeous offering in PS5.
