Cate Blanchett plays a lesbian mother in Todd Haynes new film "Carol," an entry at the Cannes Film Festival 2015. Rooney Mara joins Blanchett as a shop assistant who has an affair with Carol. Blanchett's personal life however, was dragged into the film's popularity as she admits having intimate relationship with women before.
Cate Blanchett admitted in an interview for "Carol" that she has had 'many' intimate relationships with women in the past. However, the acclaimed actress stressed at a news conference in Cannes that some parts of her interview were edited out, making it seem like she has also had sexual relationships with those girls.
"From memory, the conversation ran, 'Have you had relationships with women?' And I said, 'Yes, many times. If you mean I've had sexual relationships with them, the answer is 'No' - but that obviously didn't make it to print," said Blanchett.
Based on Patricia Highsmith's "The Price of Salt," "Carol," centers on the life of a married mother who has an affair with a shop assistant (Rooney Mara) while living in the early 1950s New York. In preparation for her role, Blanchett said she read a lot of "girl-on-girl books from the period."
Cate has expressed her admiration towards the characters' discretion in the film. She said that her character's sexuality in the movie is only discussed carefully, as opposed to people's ways at present.
"What often happens these days is if you are homosexual you have to talk about it constantly, the only thing, before your work. We're living in a deeply conservative time," she furthered.
"Carol" already received much recognition from the critics in Cannes. It earned five star reviews across the board while also being a strong Oscar candidate.
